The most walkable corner of the New York student map.
Not all New York City student housing is equally placed. The Upper West Side sits at the center of an unusually dense cluster of campuses: Columbia and Barnard at 116th and 120th Streets, Teachers College and the Manhattan School of Music just north, Bank Street at 112th, Juilliard and Fordham at Lincoln Center to the south. The 1 train runs the length of the neighborhood and connects all of them; the B and C trains cross under Central Park to Midtown. From 205 and 207 West 85th Street, most of the uptown campuses are between eight minutes on foot and fifteen minutes door to door.
The neighborhood also does the quieter work that matters over a full academic year. It is residential, so the streets are calm enough to study and sleep. Central Park is two blocks east and Riverside Park three blocks west, which very few Manhattan addresses can claim in both directions. Groceries, coffee, and late-evening food line Amsterdam and Broadway. For a student weighing a two-semester stay, the difference between a loud neighborhood and a livable one compounds across every week of the program.
